BOX ELDER — Drafts of a proposed ordinance that would allow Box Elder residents to keep backyard chickens within city limits is scheduled for discussion during the Finance, Legal, and Public Safety Committee meeting tonight.
No action is expected at this stage. The ordinance is an early-stage draft intended for review and discussion only.
According to agenda materials posted on the city’s website, committee members will review draft regulations governing the keeping of chickens in residential areas and address questions as the proposal moves through the review process. The draft remains subject to further revisions before any potential consideration by the City Council.
The Box Elder City Council directed city staff to draft an ordinance during its May 19 regular meeting. The recommendation followed results from two public meetings and an online poll in which residents could vote either in favor of or opposed to a potential ordinance change. Of the 451 ballots cast, 313 supported allowing backyard chickens and 138 opposed, according to city officials.
The committee meeting is at 6 p.m. The Box Elder City Council meeting will follow at 7 p.m. Both meetings will be held in City Hall.
