BOX ELDER — The City of Box Elder will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary by gathering items for a time capsule for the Salute to Ellsworth celebration.

“Time capsules have become a meaningful way to reflect on our unique American experience and way of life,” said Public Information Officer Rebecca Bader. “Box Elder looks ahead with a commitment to ‘Save the Moment and Share the Future’ by dedicating a centennial time capsule during the Salute to Ellsworth celebration.”

The capsule will be opened in 2064, marking 100 years since the establishment of the city’s first ordinance.

The city is seeking items in three categories: Box Elder 2026, Culture and Arts and Family History and Community Life. Submissions may include city publications, local business menus, Douglas School District yearbooks, sports photos and memorabilia, as well as local artwork, creative writing, cultural event programs, family photographs and letters. Military family stories and Ellsworth Air Force Base memorabilia are also highly encouraged.

The city will officially begin accepting items on June 29 during the Box Elder Toastmasters open house at City Hall. Items for the time capsule can be dropped off at the front desk of City Hall. Staff will provide a submission form for contact information. The deadline to submit items is Sept. 1.

Submitted items should be clean, dry and in good condition. Photographs should be labeled with names, dates and locations. All documents should be legible and suitable for long-term preservation. Each item should include a description noting why it should be included in the capsule.

Digital submissions will be accepted in approved media formats, including PDF, JPG, PNG, MP4 and MP3 files. Files should be submitted on standard storage devices such as USB drives, clearly labeled with the submitter’s name and description. Materials must be final versions and free of password protection or specialized software requirements.

Submitted items will become part of the Centennial Box Elder Time Capsule collection and may not be returned. The city reserves the right to determine final inclusion based on available space, preservation concerns and historical relevance.
